Thesis Title: The Situated Mind: an Essay in the Theory of Reference

Jérôme Dokic

About

In the last few years, I have been working on a pragmatist account of the mind, based on the notion of practical knowledge. My project is to develop it in a number of interrelated domains:

1. Linguistic competence, the nature of rules and conventions, and the social dimension of linguistic interchanges, conceived as a species of cooperative activities.

2. Singular reference, in particular, the mastery of context-sensitive expressions such as indexicals.

3. Perceptual experience, its relation to categorization, and the epistemology of perception-judgment transitions.

4. The emergence of intentionality and meaning. The development of a naturalistic program that doesn't rely on the semantic notion of information.
