About
My research is centered around Contemporary American Indian art and material culture.
My dissertation approaches the various layers of Indigenous arts within the dynamic of the indigenous art market in the United States, situating artistic production within the context of its interaction with collectors, vendors, clients and patrons. It examines: 1. The potential tension or ambiguity between artists involved in processes of self-commoditization for “Ethnic art sales”, and those contemporary artists who attempt to produce spheres resistant to these types of market practices. 2. How artists negotiate their place within the Indigenous ‘art world’, as well as the multiplicity of agencies, power relations and collectivities within it. 3. How notions of “tradition” and “authenticity” are constructed, internalized, or rejected by Indigenous artists. 4. Different meanings attributed to works of art from their movement from local to international spheres of exhibition and diffusion.
