Thesis Title: Islam and Malay Historiography in the Philippines: A Study on the Sarsila

Henri Chambert-Loir

About

I am a PhD candidate in Indonesian and Philippines studies.

My studies brought me to a broad reflection on Southeast Asian historiography: my overall interest concerns the ways to reconstruct social and cultural history with non-conventional sources, such as artifacts and local traditions, using a comparative analysis method based on a regional perspective.

Futhermore, I have a deep interest for women's history in Asia, especially in a context of war or rebellion. My work, which is currently being published, on the female combatants from Aceh, the "Inong balee", is the starting point of a study on Muslim women and the politics of autonomy in Indonesia and the Philippines from the 19th to the 21th century.
